New Year’s Eve
So I’m down in Sussex now for New Year. The journey down took about six hours because it’s literally as far down the south coast you can go – I’m sure it’s closer to France than most of the rest of England. It’s kind of weird being by the sea and hearing seagulls in December, especially as it’s pretty cold.
At the moment I’m watching Go Diego Go with some friends and Joe’s young nephew, Morgan (which is the reason why we’re watching it). Bless. I know there’s a whole argument from parents worried that the bilingual nature of the show will mean their kids don’t learn English properly, but that’s a load of rubbish. Any good linguist will tell you that children learn language from the people around them more than anything else. And unused language will die out in any case most of the time – my dad is definitely losing most of his first language despite speaking it at work and to his family every day. So learning a few words of Spanish isn’t going to stunt English language development whatsoever. Even kids as young as one know which language to choose to communicate with the other person/people they’re having a conversation with, even if they’re completely bi- or trilingual. Anyway, random rant over
I was feeling a bit crappy before because I hate New Year. No idea why, except that it’s generally kind of boring for me. Hopefully tonight will be good though – not doing anything too exciting, but there’s lots to eat and drink, anf that’s never a bad thing!
I hope you all have a fab New Year and I’ll be blogging my resolutions in detail very soon!

Yeah, I’m losing the first language I’ve ever learned too… Due to the fact that I constantly use English now and I hardly speak that first language.
