Still alive…just about

Jenni posted at October 26, 2006 @ 5:25 pm 10 Comments

Just to let you guys know that I haven’t disappeared off the face of the earth…just been amazingly busy (for a change). I’ve been going to work when I haven’t been at lectures, and in the evenings I’m going out quite a bit and trying to catch up. I’ve said that I won’t work tomorrow though because I need to catch up with uni work, even though the £45 would’ve been nice and contributed towards mine and Andy’s meal out tonight and my driving lesson. Still, I have loads of student vouchers so now it’s just a case of deciding where to go :P

Not keeping on top of house stuff at all though – I went shopping a couple of times and just picked up the essentials (bread, milk, cheese etc.), and I do the washing up when it starts to pile up (ditto laundry), but I haven’t hoovered or cleaned properly for nearly a week now lol. We have laminate/wood flooring and it gets dirty/dusty so ridiculously easily, especially with quite a few people walking around on it.

So…I will be bumper-blogging when I get a few hours to spare – possibly early next week/this weekend, although it’s set to be another busy week for me. Eeep.

9 hours on the computer yesterday from uni work and work work = not good. Especially as I’ve been on the computer for work for several hours today too – I’m getting very headachy and dizzy..so I will leave now.

Time

I actually have no idea where time is going, at the same time feeling that time is going really slowly…strange much? Maybe it’s because I’m doing quite a lot of stuff at the moment, whilst counting the days until the 20th, which is when Andy is coming to visit.

So I’ve had lectures and seminars as usual this week. On Tuesday I went to The Warsaw Diner in town for the Polish Society Social. I got to taste a lot of Polish food, which was interesting (and surprisingly nice, if a little on the greasy side). Also, I got to chat to Laura who I haven’t seen for a while so that’s cool. On Wednesday I went to the Community Action induction (so I can do volunteering work through uni), and met lots of lovely people. Wednesday night I went to the cinema with Richard and saw Children Of Men, which was good if slightly freaky :P Thursday I met Sarah at the library before lectures, then we went to the theatre to see Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads. Again, good, if a little freaky in the way it overtly addresses racism and violence. Perhaps the freakiest thing, however, was the fact that I happened to book seats right next to the girl that Sarah and I hate the most in our year. She’s just incredibly irritating and blah. But luckily the theatre was emptyish where we were and we moved seats during the interval. Yesterday I got the train home (I was stressed because I missed a bus and thought I would miss the train too, but I made it by about 5 minutes). Worryingly, I overhead the following conversation:

Old Woman 1: Ohh, this is the way we go when we go to London!
Old Woman 2: Oh, so it is!

Now for those of you who a) are unfamiliar with British geography or b) unfamiliar with my travelling from home to my parents’, here’s a little background. I was travelling from Nottingham, which is roughly in the middle of the country. Manchester, where we were headed, is in the north west of the country. London is in the south east. We could not have been going any more in the opposite direction. I find it rather worrying that these people had reached the age they had (probably late 60s at the youngest) without grasping the rough directions of two of England’s biggest cities. I just thanked God they got off at Sheffield, because at Sheffield the train pulls in, switches lines, then pulls out in the ‘same’ direction, which is confusing enough for normal people :P Later, I heard an argument break out between two strangers about whether the train was headed for Manchester or Liverpool, only being settled by a third stranger to tell them that it went to both Manchester and Liverpool. Sometimes I wonder how people manage to buy tickets/find their way onto the train in the first place.

When I finally arrived at home, I got greeted by my family in their various ways (ranging from kisses to ?Pom pissing on my feet with excitement). It’s nice being looked after for a couple of days and seeing everyone again. I’ve been shopping twice, and today we picked up my new TV from my dad’s friend. I’ve met him once that I remember, the first time being last year when I got my laptop from him. The first thing he said to me was, ‘Have you lost weight?’, which threw me so much I nearly fell over in shock. I expect comments about my weight from females, and generally people who haven’t seen me for ages. Added to that is the fact that I’ve been gaining rather than losing, possibly something to do with the supposed 10 pounds or so that students apparently gain in their first year, and also a whole summer of not going to the gym *shrugs* Also, it was kind of embarrassing, seeing as I was with my dad and cousin at the time. I’m just hoping the scales at home are wrong, lol. But I somehow doubt they are :P

My sister went to a couple of open days today, since she’s starting sixth form college (roughly 16-18 year olds) next year. One of the colleges she went to see was my old college, so I went along to see how it’s changed, see a couple of old teachers etc. I ended up talking to prospective students, talking about the history and geography courses etc. lol. I did get the chance to catch up with two or three of my old teachers though, and found out that a couple of them know some of my teachers from high school which is rather weird. Sooo by then my family had got tired of waiting for me, so I walked back instead of getting a lift with them. I spent this evening watching The X Factor (those Scottish brothers who I’ve nicknamed ‘Frodo and Friend’ really really need to leave. Soon.), and Ant and De’cs Saturday Night Takeaway. Tomorrow my dad is driving me back to Notts and doing a few jobs like finishing off setting up the alarm, setting up the TV, hanging a few mirrors. I really need to take some pictures of the house soon because there are none up in the gallery yet!

I’m slightly concerned about the number of comments – if you’re having any trouble posting one then please email me! :)

Goose Fair

Proof that it doesn’t always rain in England!

We went to the Goose Fair on Saturday. It’s basically a big fair with rides and games that lasts a week or so. Strangely enough, one of my high school friends who I haven’t seen for getting on for 4 years now text me asking if I was going because he was. Unfortunately we left just before he got there (it’s in a dodgy area and we didn’t want to get shot by staying there too late!) so I didn’t get to see him.

We ended up buying fudge, playing games that we had no chance of winning (apart from hook a duck!) and went on rides (although I got freaked out by the kids’ ‘Roller Ghoster’ and wouldn’t go on any more)…and buying a clock. There was a craft fair and we ended up buying a funky steel clock for our house, which was not cheap at £36 (about $72 USD). Gah, crazy moments :P I really need to work on the impulsive thing.

From left to right: Richard, Chris, Nika and Richard. Spot the normal one?

We were supposed to be going to Sarah’s party that night, but I was so exhausted after the day’s events I went to sleep and didn’t wake up until it was too late lol.

I’m busy as ever – I got the FTP details for the website I’m supposed to be making, so I’ve been playing with ideas for that. I also have tons of notes to write up, the washing up to do and also some passages of Richard II to re-read and make notes on for tomorrow. I’m supposed to have the morning off to do that, but I’m probably going to go swimming, so that’s out of the window. Meh. I’m also supposed to have Wednesday off (I only have 5 hours of lectures and seminars this week, so I have quite a lot of time off), but I’m thinking of going to either the gym or the library in the morning, and I have my Community Action induction in the afternoon…I just want a bit more time to kick back and relax without feeling guilty about not doing something! After tomorrow I don’t have any more seminars this week, which means no work apart from reading, making notes and writing up notes. I’m going to Nika’s Polish Social thing though (a Polish food taster night at a Polish restaurant), and I’m going to the theatre with Sarah on Thursday. Then I’ll probably go home for the weekend on Friday. Busy busy busy!
